Choosing the Right Tungsten
- Red Tip (2% Thoriated): Solid all-rounder. Perfect for stainless and most day-to-day TIG work. Can run aluminium if you’re stuck it’ll handle it fine.
- Gold Tip (1.5% Lanthanated): Another great all-rounder. Works across stainless, mild steel, and aluminium with stable arc starts.
- White Tip (Zirconiated): Best choice for straight aluminium work. Holds up well with AC and keeps the tip clean.
Welding Stainless?
Stainless loves control. A dual gas lens keeps your coverage stable, a razor-sharp tungsten gives you a tighter arc, and running lower amps helps you keep colour, minimise heat input, and stay in control of the puddle.
Welding Aluminium?
Aluminium is all about clean control. A small ceramic (#8) gives you tighter gas coverage, a single gas lens is all you need, and AC balance handles the cleaning for you. A slightly balled tungsten keeps the arc stable and makes the puddle easier to manage.
